Why Manufacturing Employers Are Reconsidering Benefits in a Competitive Labour Market

Manufacturing employers have long competed on wages, overtime, shifts, and job stability. Those factors still matter, but they may no longer be enough on their own.

The sector is facing pressure from technology change, retirements, skills gaps, and competition from other industries. In Ontario, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters reported that manufacturing vacancies peaked at 30,100 in 2022 during the pandemic labour shortage. While conditions later cooled, the report still emphasized serious workforce challenges across the sector. Source: Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters‍ ‍

Longer-term pressure is also clear. Canada’s advanced manufacturing strategy reported that there were 30,000 jobs waiting to be filled in the sector and projected that an additional 55,600 workers would be needed by 2026. Source: ISED Canada‍ ‍

For employers, that creates a practical problem.

A plant cannot run efficiently without reliable people. Staffing gaps can slow production, increase overtime, strain supervisors, and affect quality. In manufacturing, one unfilled role can create pressure across an entire line.

Benefits can help employers compete in that environment.

Manufacturing work often involves physical demands, shift schedules, repetitive tasks, safety risks, and long-term wear on the body. Employees may value prescription coverage, dental care, physiotherapy, disability insurance, mental health support, and family coverage in ways that directly relate to their work and life.

Benefits are not a replacement for wages. They are part of the total compensation picture.

If two employers offer similar pay, the stronger benefits package may help one employer stand out.

For manufacturers, benefits should not be treated only as an administrative expense. They can support workforce stability, reduce replacement pressure, and help employees see the employer as a long-term option.

In a sector where skills are difficult to replace, keeping experienced workers matters.

A credible benefits plan can help.
